Wildlife in the garden

Hare

This hare wasn’t seen in our garden – but outside of our holiday cottage window!

Poplar Hawk-moth

This Poplar Hawk-moth (Laothoe populi) was well camouflaged on the bark of the willow tree but when disturbed revealed red patches on its underwings.

Squirrel

A baby squirrel emerging from it’s nest in our willow tree.

Badger footprint

A badger footprint in the snow, on the road outside the house during winter 2020/21.

Southern Hawker Dragonfly

We came across this magnificent creature while cutting the hedge. It is a female Southern Hawker dragonfly (Aeshna cyan). The male has blue markings.

Sycamore Moth

We spotted this Sycamore Moth (Actronicta aceris) larvae in the lane, living dangerously by crossing the road!

Mint Moth

We spotted (excuse the pun!) this Mint Moth (Pyrausta aurata) on the mint in the herb garden.

Gatekeeper

One sunny day in mid July, several of these Gatekeeper butterflies (Pyronia tithonus) were flitting around the herb garden feeding on the flowers of the marjoram.

Meadow Brown

On a sunny afternoon in late June, there were clouds of Meadow Brown butterflies (Maniola jurtina) feeding on the wild flowers that we’d allowed to grow up in the paddock. Similar in appearance to the Gatekeeper butterfly but without the orange patches on their lower wings.

Lappet

We first noticed this moth when we saw what looked like a dead leaf walking across the grass! It is a Lappet moth (Gastropacha quercifolia).

Cream-spot Tiger Moth

Spotted (!) this cream-spot tiger moth (Arctica villica) on the grass one evening in mid May.

Grey Squirrel

Grey squirrels are frequent visitors to the garden, and can usually be found raiding the bird feeders.

Blue Tit

Roe Deer

Redwing

Seen on a snowy day in the garden.

Starlings

A pair of starlings has nested in a hole in the willow tree for several years, the hole was originally made by a pair of nesting spotted woodpeckers.

Rabbit

Although we have a wire netting fence around the garden to keep out unwanted pests – we get the occasional break in! Although this character was only eating the grass…..most of the time.

Wildlife Video

A short compilation of video clips we have captured on our trail camera.

Badger

We are still waiting to get a good photo of the badgers in the adjacent fields, this is probably the best we’ve got so far!

Weasel

A weasel (Mustela nivalis) appeared on the patio recently, presumably after the many voles in the garden.

Comma

A Comma butterfly (Polygonia C-album) spotted on a recent walk.

Nut Hatch

We see both Nut Hatches and Tree Creepers in the garden on an infrequent basis.

Long Tailed Tits

Our record is a flock of about a dozen.

Pheasant

The pheasants usually confine themselves to the fields, but do come into the garden, especially when the apples are falling from the trees.

Skylark

Seen on holiday in the Dales, not in the garden!

Great White Egret

Seen at RSPB Ham Wall

Great Tit

A pair of great tits nested in a hole in the apple tree outside our kitchen window in 2019.

Thrush

A thrush decided that the flat stones edging the alpine bed made an ideal anvil for opening snails.

Robin

A winter robin.

Chaffinch

A puffed up chaffinch!
